Called to the Bar in 1969, Virginia MacLean commenced practice in Stratford, then moved to the Provincial Government where she attended regularly before the Commercial Registration Appeal Tribunal. She was the Director of Legal Services for the Corporation of the City of Mississauga and a partner at Cassels Brock & Blackwell LLP before joining Willms & Shier.  She became a sole practitioner in 2006 and is currently practicing in Oakville. In April 2011 she was elected to the Law Society as the Regional Bencher for Central West. Appointments: In 2006, Virginia was appointed by the Council of the City of Toronto to be a member of the Election Compliance Audit Committee. The Committee conducted hearings in 2007 under the Municipal Elections Act, 1996.  She was retained as Acting Town Solicitor for the Town of Aurora in the fall of 2008 to the spring of 2009. In 2010 Virginia was appointed by the Council of the City of Toronto to the 2010 Election Compliance Audit Committee. She was appointed by the Council of the Town of Oakville to the 2010 Municipal Election Compliance Audit Committee. She was also appointed to the Joint Audit Compliance Committee for the Towns of Aurora, East Gwillimbury, Georgina, Richmond Hill , Whitchurch-Stouffville and the Township of King. Distinctions and Awards: Virginia was appointed to Queen's Counsel in 1982.  In 2006 she was the recipient of the Ontario Bar Association - Linda Adlam Manning Award for Volunteerism.  In 2006 the Law Society of Upper Canada authorized her to identify herself as a Certified Specialist Municipal Law: Local Government/Land Use Planning and Development. In June of 2010 Virginia was honoured to be awarded the Law Society Medal by the Law Society of Upper Canada. Contributions to the profession: Virginia is a past president of the Ontario Bar Association.  She has also served the Ontario Bar Association and Canadian Bar Association in many other capacities including as chair or vice-chair of the Municipal Law Section, the Government Relations Committee, the Paralegals Task Force and the Legislation and Law Reform Committee.  She has also served as president of the Women's Law Association of Ontario and the Professional Womens’ Symposium Association.  She is a Director of the Osgoode Society for Canadian Legal History and a member of the Chief Justice of Ontario's Advisory Committee on Professionalism. She has also written numerous articles and lectured widely.
